The newsletter supports literacy activities in the home, community and school. First Nation content is included whenever possible along with word puzzles, activities, jokes, science facts, poems, a family literacy activity and submissions from the children in the communities. The children are encouraged to write to Amick (the friendly beaver who corresponds with club readers through the newsletter) and to submit a variety of creative works, such as book reviews, jokes, drawings and poems. For this purpose, blank Club Amick postcards are distributed with the reading materials. Space is made available in the newsletter to display some of the postcards sent in by readers. In this way, the children not only benefit from, but contribute to, the development of a community of readers. Each year over 200 postcards are sent to Amick, many of which find their way onto the pages of the newsletter. The postcards give the children a chance to share their beautiful artwork and to let Amick know how much they enjoy the books they receive.

Book Mark Contests

From time to time, a bookmark contest in announced and children are encouraged to use their artisitc skills and imagination to develop bookmarks that celebrate reading. The winning bookmarks are highlighted in the Club Amick newsletter and winning artists get to have a school wide art workshop. Kashechewan recently hosted an art workshop led by a First Nation artist Fallon Andy.
