In addition to the newsletter, readers are provided with an opportunity to engage with Club Amick through contests and initiatives. The popular contests encourage readers to use Club Amick book selection themes to express their artistic side. Students are encouraged to use photographs, storytelling, drawings or crafts. Winners of the contests received prizes along with a certificate from E.T. the librarian and Amick. Initiatives include the Club Amick school twinning program. The program follows the spirit of another of the Honourable James Bartleman’s literacy initiatives. Links are made between schools in Club Amick communities and schools in Southern Ontario urban settings. Through the twinning, readers are able to share their love of literacy through common interests and different perspectives. The focus this year is on teaming up Club Amick readers with students living in urban areas who have similar connections to First Nation cultures and languages. Four new twinnings begin this fall. Club Amick is also asking readers to submit material for a calendar initiative. Readers have an opportunity to use their imagination by helping to create a school calendar that highlights their reading activities during the school year and over the summer. We will collect material from all 36 Club Amick communities and make a school calendar which will be distributed to their schools. Club Amick contests and initiatives are meant to encourage literacy among readers and to foster family, school and community participation. Club Amick staff work closely with Club Amick schools and community support services to enhance literacy among Club Amick readers. |
