Win-An-Artist Contest

Hello, Club Amick Readers!

Chad Solomon and E.T. the Librarian visit the North!

Poplar Hill

Boozhoo! Aanii! Tansi! Hello! Club Amick Readers. On Monday, October 6th and Tuesday, October 7th, 2008, Chad Solomon and E.T. the Librarian visited Club Amick readers at Abe Scatch Memorial Hill School in Poplar Hill First Nation. The school was a winner of the Win-An-Artist contest held in Spring 2008.

Upon their arrival at Poplar Hill, Chad and E.T. were greeted by principal, Howard Comber, who gave them a tour of the community before taking them to the school. At the school, Chad and E.T. were met with a warm welcome from Club Amick readers, teachers and support staff. After the workshops, Howard gave Chad and E.T.  a tour of the community and later on, they visited the local radio station where Chad and E.T. went ‘on air’ to thank community members and Chief and Council for having them in the community. In the evening, the staff held a potluck dinner and Chad and E.T. enjoyed a variety of foods including bannock and Howard’s famous duck soup!

On both days of their visit, Chad held art workshops for Club Amick readers who learned how to draw the main characters of Rabbit and Bear Paws and how reading for fun can include creating their own stories and characters. Workshops ended with plenty of questions from Club Amick readers and a chance for them to win prizes and for everyone to receive goodies. At the end of the second day, warm good-byes were exchanged by all and Chad and E.T. were given gifts and cards made by Club Amick readers. Chad and E.T. enjoyed themselves immensely at Poplar Hill First Nation and would like to send a huge Miigwech to the school and community for making their stay so comfortable.

Wapekeka

Boozhoo! Aanii! Tansi! Hello! Club Amick Readers. On Wednesday, October 8th, 2008, Chad Solomon and E.T. the Librarian visited Club Amick readers at Rez. Eleazar Winter Memorial School in Wapekeka First Nation. The school was also selected as one of the three winners of the Win-An-Artist contest held in Spring 2008.

Upon their arrival at Wapekeka, Chad and E.T. were taken to the school where they were greeted by principal, Dale Sedgwick. After a tour of the school and meeting teachers and support staff, Chad held art workshops for Club Amick readers who were introduced to Rabbit and Bearpaws, the two main characters in Chad’s series on the humorous antics of two Anishinaabe brothers. During the workshops, Club Amick readers learned how to combine their love of reading and drawing to create their own stories and characters. At the end of the workshops, Club Amick readers received copies of Chad’s first book, and gifts and prizes from E.T.

Chad and E.T. received a huge surprise when they found out that the teachers and support staff had put together a special lunch in honour of their visit. The children and staff shared a delicious meal with Chad and E.T. who enjoyed a variety of foods including bannock burgers and some fabulous moose stew! Later in the day, Chad and E.T. went on a walking tour of the community before being whisked off to the airport. Chad and E.T. would like to extend a huge Miigwech to the school and community for a giving us a wonderful experience. A special thanks to the staff for making our visit so enjoyable.

Boozhoo! Aanii! Tansi! Hello! Club Amick Readers. In January 2009, Chad Solomon and E.T. the Librarian made their last Win-an-Artist contest trip to Matahamao School in Peawanuck (Weenusk First Nation).

Community members and school staff went out of their way to make the visit comfortable and interesting. During their three day stay, Chad and E.T. enjoyed a snowmobile tour of the community which included a twilight ride on the Weenusk River! Teaching staff lent snowmobile shoes so Chad and E.T. could enjoy walking on some of the many trails surrounding the community.

Club Amick readers welcomed Chad and E.T. into their classrooms. The readers enjoyed the art workshops and had plenty of questions for Chad. After two days of workshops filled with drawing, learning and prize giving, readers presented Chad and Eliza with a card and gifts. Chad and E.T. would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Weenusk First Nation for all their hospitality.
